Meet our newest rescue, *White Dove*.
White Dove came to us from a mucky pen she shared with Muscovy ducks. While ducks thrive in the water, turkeys lack those oily, waterproof feathers. The constant moisture caused her to lose nearly all the feathers on her underside, leaving her with painful, ingrown quills struggling to break through damaged skin.
The Secret Ingredient: Hunter’s Helping Hand
The most vital part of White Dove’s recovery hasn’t just been the medicine—it’s been the bond she’s forming with *Hunter*.
While turkeys are incredibly intelligent, they are also deeply emotional. They need to feel safe to heal. Hunter has taken over “table service” for White Dove, making sure she gets her specialized, high-protein recovery crumble several times a day.
Watching the two of them together is pure magic. Hunter is patient and gentle, and White Dove has officially become his “Velcro” bird. She follows him across the yard, watching his every move, knowing that when he shows up, it means a full belly and a little extra kindness. It’s this connection that lowers her stress levels, allowing her body to put all its energy into growing back those beautiful feathers.
Turkey Recovery 101: Our Care Plan
Restoring a turkey’s health requires a very specific touch:
The “Dry Feet” Rule:* Unlike her former duck roommates, White Dove needs a bone-dry, bedded coop to prevent foot rot and respiratory issues.
Feather Regrowth: Growing turkey feathers is energy-intensive! Hunter ensures she’s getting 20-24% protein* loaded with essential amino acids like methionine to fuel that new plumage.
Follicle Monitoring:* We check her daily for “stuck” quills. Since turkey feathers are heavy and blood-filled during regrowth, the process can be sensitive, but she handles it like a queen.
White Dove is transforming from a “muddy duckling” into a majestic bird right before our eyes. Watching her find her voice (and her feathers!) has been the absolute highlight of our week at the farm.
